What is mediation?

Mediation can be very useful in resolving disputes between neighbours, groups, in the workplace or at school. In fact, in any dispute where both sides want to try and resolve the problem, mediation can work.

Mediation is a co-operative way of resolving problems between people. It involves the help of mediators - people who aren't personally involved in the conflict and who won't take sides. Mediation aims to find a way forward by mutual agreement and by focusing on the future instead of on the past. It doesn't label someone a winner or a loser. This is why it is sometimes called a win-win approach.

It is quick, informal and confidential. The people who make the decisions are the people directly involved in the problem. It is much better than having the solution decided by a third party - like the courts. It is often cheaper than a solicitor.

REMEMBER: EVERYTHING DISCUSSED WITH MEDIATORS IS CONFIDENTIAL
